While I’m wholeheartedly onboard in saying its foolish to own a pitbull, I have to disagree about the shaking. My 15 lb mutt used to do exactly that when it caught a squirrel...bite it and shake it till its neck snapped. I also used to have a Huskie who would do this with oppossum. Now a pitbull might be the only dog that does this with a victim as large as a man, but other dogs definitely shake their prey.
That’s a convincing argument.
My little brother was a dogbite magnet. He’d look sideways at dogs and try to sneak away. None of this was lost on the dogs. As an adult, he got bitchy with me because my dog was in his garden. I told him to shut up and watch the dog’s feet. Always placed in harmless areas. He said “I suppose dogs don’t bite, either. “ I said “Who told you that? Look in their mouths for God’s sake. “. The dog you reference is playing. Not the way you or I would, but it’s playing. Educate your kids. The one that ran would have been the next “toy,” if the dog were ‘t occupied. Again, an unsupervised dog was involved. It happens a lot.

If one ever snarled near me, I’d shoot it.
Ive never heard of Basset Hounds killing people.
No matter how screwed up the owners are.
Nobody needs an "assault dog" (with some arbitrary definition). Therefore nobody needs a dog bigger than about 50-60 pounds that might sorta look like a pit bull maybe.
I’ll tell you what.... I adopted a small puppy of unknown/questionable/bernese mountain dog/possible mix of pit in him.... and he’s growing enormous.
He looks more like a golden retriever/shepherd, his 4 month old paw fills up my hand.
Had him since October. He’s loyal but not affectionate and I don’t love him yet - waiting to see how it goes. If he exhibits any pit/aggressive traits he’s gone.
I would guess a partial/pit/mix wouldn’t be as vicious as full bred, but he’s got some really questionable behaviors that I can’t break him of yet. Puppy training in January - the only I’ve ever chosen classes for.
Anyway, yeah, I wouldn’t have or trust a pit no matter what. They’re practically wild beasts. Poor family, I’m sure they did nothing to provoke the attack. Get 2 dogs together and the jealousy can be overpowering for any reason.
But they are a really gentle breed. Kinda like Bengal Tigers.
Just make sure they are well fed.
It’s kinda interesting. When someone I know tells me they own a pitbull, it’s kinda like telling me they are trying to kick Meth.
That is, they go down a few notches.
My pit did it with a porcupine until the mouthful of skin came off, and then he spat it out as best he could and went for another.
Watch out if their pit bull is on meth.
You seem to be assuming that everyone is well-versed enough in dog behavior to be able to educate their kids. There are a lot of people who have never owned a dog. Are they just SOL? I'd bet it fairly likely that the kid who was attacked in the video is unlikely to ever want to own a dog in the future. For those people who are unfortunate enough to not have an expert like you around to educate them, maybe there should be mandatory courses in school to teach kids how to protect themselves from being harmed by somebody's dog.
For me, I don't worry about dogs in my neighborhood. If a dog in my neighborhood would start acting aggressive toward me or kids, I'd just call the sheriff and insist that the dog is either kept chained up to protect me and others from it, or put down if it actually ever connects tooth to skin.
Instead of requiring innocent bystanders to learn to protect themselves from being attacked by your dog, it should be the dog-owners responsibility to educate their dogs that "play" like that is not allowed. Jail time for failure to responsibly manage their dog would work for me.
An addemdum to my post 113. I’d never call the sheriff about any dog that is protecting his own property. As long as it stays in its own yard, it can bark at me all it wants. The dog and I agree on the boundaries. I stay out of his territory, and he stays in it.
On further viewing, ‘d say the dog probably thought the kid was another dog. Usually, your first warning of aggressive behavior will result in a bite. And, usually, it will be precipitated by the bitten, whether they know why, or not. Do you let your kids play in traffic? Would you let them get hit by a car to make your point?
Of course not. But people are being attacked when they're minding their own business on their own property or walking on the sidewalk. A kid going onto the property where a pit bull lives would be the equivalent of playing in the street. A kid minding his own business in his own driveway (like in the video) is not.
And if this same owner had beagles that women would be alive. Whats your point? Its a breed that has been bred for killing. Even in the best of hands it is unpredictable and for many barely controllable animal.
Looks like he was half in the street, to me. Cars don’t run into houses where you live? No dogs live on my street, but they occasionally come out of the woods. Think you’re safe in your house? Bet you’ve got locks on the doors. It’s the world we live in.
Read up on the breed before you commit to assuming the posterior of the equine species.
But that's the point...Some of these loving pit bull family dogs 'turn' at some point, to the shock and dismay of their owners...And they are not content to just bite you...They kill you and then rip you apart...
