Trump announced the move on Dec. 6, ending decades of U.S. ambiguity on the status of the city that both Israel and the Palestinians claim as their capital.
(JTA) To thank the 65 countries that did not support a resolution condemning President Donald Trumps position on Jerusalem, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, invited her counterparts from those states to a reception.
Haley extended the invitation Thursday hours after the General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Trumps recognition of Jerusalem as Israels capital, the nrg news site reported.
Nine countries voted against the resolution, including Israel, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras and Togo, and 35 abstained, including the six EU member states Poland, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Latvia. The rest of the European Union was among the 128 nations that voted in favor.
The representatives of 21 countries were absent from the vote, which was the 10th time in U.N. history that the General Assembly was convened for an emergency voting. They included Kenya, which was the fifth-largest recipient of U.S. aid last year, Georgia and Ukraine, all of which have close ties with the United States.
Absenteeism is unusual in emergency session votes.
Prior to the vote, Trump wrote on Twitter: Were watching those votes. Let them vote against us, well save a lot. We dont care. His words were widely interpreted as a threat to cut aid to countries that vote against the United States position on Jerusalem.

Cut off aid? Now.
I’d like to point out that America’s “special” friend Great Britain voted against America here. Germany and France voted against America too, but that’s to be expected.
I would have thought that Britain would have at least abstained. But maybe they don’t want to provoke any more stabbings.
Send a memo to the countries who voted against the US: Your country has received $xxxxxxxxxx in foreign aid over the last 10 years. Could you explain in less than 500 words why that aid should continue?
Aid is given, she added, in order to advance our values and our interests. When that happens, our participation in the United Nations produces great good for the world. The United States does this because it represents who we are. It is our American way.
But, Haley said, well be honest with you. When we make generous contributions to the U.N., we also have a legitimate expectation that our good will is recognized and respected. When a nation is singled out for attack in this organization, that nation is disrespected. Whats more, that nation is asked to pay for the privilege of being disrespected.
I really like her speech. Putting the UN on notice.
Personally I'd like to see the United States pull out and kick the UN offshore, building and all.
Yu. The once heroic people of Britain are cowering in fear.
Kick the UN out? Yesterday.
Friends don't do that to friends. Especially "special" friends. Next time Argentina fights with GB over the Falklands, we should side with Argentina and let them take the islands away.
Didn’t Obummer vote ‘present’ a lot during his tenure as a United States Senator?
Why are sending aid to these nations in the first place?
Maybe I am wrong but Nikki Haley is knocking it out of the park.
They are too scared to stand up to the Muslim invaders of of their countries.
I have long advocated that the "UN" Headquarters be relocated to Port Au Prince, Haiti or a similar location which could benefit from a HUGE boost in their economy! Of course, the staffing of the "UN" would be greatly diminished as a result... (AND NYC would have FAR less parking problems!)
Or how about the US position on the UK post-Brexit trade deal....
It’s time to show some of these so called ‘nations’, many of them controlled by despot criminal leaders and criminal political organizations where there bread is buttered and who’s buttering it. Cut them off and let them enjoy life without the billions in US aid that they line their pockets with.
yep......

Interestingly enough, Argentina abstained in that UN vote. At least it can be said that Argentina did note vote against the United States (as Britain did).
Anyone know how Slovenia voted?
Aid to all offending countries should be stopped immediately. Let them come back hat-in-hand to justify why they should get one more cent from us.
If we decide to resume aid, there should be strings. One of them being NEVER try to embarrass us in public again. If you must abstain, so be it, but if you vote against us in public again on a matter such as this, the spigot will be shut off and it will never be turned on as long as your regime is in power.
And that will be the start of demonstrations of our displeasure.
Although I have bad-mouthed her frequently, she seems to be executing Trumpian philosophy at the U.N. perfectly...
