Walmart is planning a store without cashiers
Axios.com ^ | 12/19/2017 | Christopher Matthews

Walmart's NYC-based innovation center is experimenting with a cashier-less store concept called Project Kepler, which "aims to reimagine the in-store shopping experience with the help of technologies like computer vision," Recode reports.

Project Kepler is in part aimed at creating a store that would feature no checkout lines or cashiers, but use computer vision to detect which products customers leave the store with and then charge their accounts accordingly. Why it matters: Amazon is also experimenting without cashiers, while roughly 3.5 million Americans operate cash registers for a living.

Recode also reports that Walmart's new start-up subsidiary, called Code 8, is experimenting with "high personalised, one-to-one shopping experiences," that will be marketed to "busy NYC moms."

That $15 wage is affecting jobs in areas where it is not the law. Pushed to go robotic companies like McDonalds find buying self order and pay kiosks in bulk is pretty cheap. McDonalds is upgrading all their stores.

And, the ones that are open are the farthest from the exits.

I find I use the self check out, when available, 90% of the time these days anyway.

use computer vision to detect which products customers leave the store with

Can it detect those items if the 'customer' is leaving at a dead run?

It will not be different in any way from today.

Today, if I go to the store and buy groceries only to find no human to check me out I leave the shopping carts right there. Milk, ice cream, steaks, cheeses, and all.

I encourage other people to do the same.

Obviously not one part of that will change.

Screw that. After Dec. 31, 2017, the corporate scum will have more of their own money to spend. Why not spend it keeping people working rather than adding them to the welfare roles. Stupid robot store will get half the orders wrong, anyway.

(Die, corporate scum.)

That’ll eliminate cashiers “missing” some items when checking out their friends, co-religionists, and those who have similar melanin levels.

Yeah, the local Wal-Mart would have 4-6 lanes out of 20 open. It was hellish shopping there , lines would be strung out. They now have self checkout near both exits. I belive it’s ten self checkouts at one and either 6 or 8 at the other end. I go through self checkout all of the time now. I’m in and out much quicker than the checker experience, a win for all involved.

My bets on Walmart to win

Amazon headquarters is able to hire top talent. Not many top performers will proudly accept working for Walmart.

I do too. The checkout machine always thanks me for shopping.

They are putting shop online and pick up in the Walmart stores here. I can’t wait.

You can pay with cash in the self check out. You just stick it in the machine and your change comes out.

Well, that will make shoplifting considerably more difficult.

It appears to assume that everyone entering or exiting the store would have an account with Walmart to charge, though. Are they going to convert them all to Sam’s Club and deny entrance to anyone without an account? I don’t see how this could be if that wasn’t the case.
