Avoid area! 9:45 AM - Dec 18, 2017 33 33 Replies 470 470 Retweets 118 118 likes Twitter Ads info and privacy Amtrak officials said the train was the No. 501, which operates between Seattle and Portland. The train had just begun using a new high-speed route Monday morning. Lakewood city oficials had earlier expressed fears that the new route would cause serious accidents.
Amtrak service south of Seattle is temporarily suspended. Service from Seattle to points north and east is continuing to operate.
Judging by the graffiti, the area was easily accessible.
Crack of dawn overcast rainy typically wet nw winter morning.
Thanks! Considering the “if it bleeds, it leads” attitude the media takes, I’m amazed there isn’t aerial coverage.
Yeah. :-(
It will be interesting to see the outcome of the investigation.
More like young "retired" people saving the earth at the tax payer's expense.
No, it is a more reputable source, Harris Faulkner.
she’s usually spot on. (nice eyes too)
Amtrak, per KOMO on Twitter, reporting 78 passengers, 5 crew on board the train.
Once you derail, the brakes don’t do much anymore. The terrain is what is slowing you down, or not, as the case may be.
There may have been a malfunction of the control/braking system as well.
There is an engine at the back and an engine at the front, and both engines are controlled by whichever is the lead engine.
There could have been a failure of the control system for the rear engine, and it kept pushing, rather than braking.

This rail crossing is in an area that is pretty sparsely populated. It’s just South of Dupont, a small town. It’s also at the end south of JBLM, a very large air/army base. South of the bridge, is a wetland area then at least 5 miles until you get to any real population area. One of the last long green belt areas far north or south of here.
Military hospital and personnel being used to deal with this train derailment. Madigan Hospital is nearby.
wow
77 people being transferred to hospitals.
KIRO-TV - Three people are dead after the derailment, according to The Tacoma News Tribune. All those killed were on the train.
Jeez, the large base nearby makes me goosey after what happened in the UK today...
Ba-ruther!
You are correct. And the State of Washington has given the walking dead/Homeless/Meth Head enlightened st hood status...they are allowed to do anything they want!
This area is reasonably close to that liberal hell hole Evergreen College which is famous for their insanity.
I was thinking it was being pushed.
