A woman in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing has been offered a second refund after faulty facial recognition software on two iPhone X handsets allowed her colleague to unlock them.
As The South China Morning Post reports, the woman, identified only by her surname Yan, told the Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation that despite activating and configuring each phone’s facial recognition software, her work colleague was able to get into both devices on every attempt.
Yan said the first time it happened, she called the Apple hotline, but the staff would not believe her.
Shen then went with her colleague to the nearest Apple store, where her colleague used facial recognition on the phone to demonstrate the issue to staff, according to the report.
The store said the camera might be faulty and gave Yan a refund. But the new iPhone X that she bought also had the same problem, prompting the shop to offer another refund, the report said.

When I was a teen, my 1956 Chevy key just happened to unlock the doors on one out of four of my friends' Chevys, and vice versa. Not just that year, but several years around that manufacture. Chevy had a rap for cars being stolen and joy-rided. This thing with that Chinese woman's phone is a minor inconvenience, like you say she can use a numeric to unlock it. I often use a numeric when my finger won't quickly open my iPhone; not a problem.

Apple admits “It continues to be 1 in a million probability of a random person unlocking your iPhone with Face ID.”
We’ve found one such case. ...out of probably 10,000,000+ devices.
And, small wonder, their match likely involves geographic proximity of genetics.
OK.
So what’s the consternation?
I would like to see the two ladies - side-by-side as the iPhone X sees them - from the poor quality photos in the story, they appear to have some VERY similar primary facial features including forehead size and shape, eyebrow ridge that is nearly identical, cheekbones that are quite similar, and overall similar face shape - which are the metrics the iPhone X uses.
Can you set the phone to not use the facial recognition.
I don’t want a phone that locks.
I would never buy this Iphone x because of it.
Face or fingerprint lock out.
