Philly City Council Approves Bill Banning Bulletproof Glass From Shops

The Philadelphia City Council voted 14-3 on Thursday to pass a bill allowing the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections to ban shop owners from protecting themselves and their employees with bulletproof plexiglass.

Philadelphia 8th District Councilwoman Cindy Bass, who sponsored the bill, said previously that having to see plexiglass represents an "indignity" to her constituents.

This is how I understand it. The City Council views the shops as nuisances and wants to see them closed. The fact that it puts Asian shopkeepers out of business is just a bonus.

The shops & stores which have bulletproof windows also have surveillance cameras. These will be rolling when the enforcers show up to harass owners for violating this ridiculous ordinance.

Then put up in lights the names of those council members who voted for it. Then put their houses & those of the enforcers on google streetview.

If a law like this ever passes and sees the light of day in America, then it's a testament to how far this great nation has fallen.

The businesses who stand to be negatively affected by this ridiculous act of government should fight this foolishness tooth and nail, and defy the law if necessary.

I've never seen of a more asinine, nonsensical example of a local government overreaching itself in my entire life, and every councilman who voted for this measure should be voted out of office and publicly ridiculed.

Such laws are an abomination. If something like this doesn't infuriate you, you don't know what Freedom means...

What part of the US Constitution does this violate?
Amendment 9
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
. . . and arguably the 2nd Amendment as well. Wouldn’t a shield be “an arm” purely for defense?

In 1755 Dr. Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language was first published. It defined “arms” as “weapons of offence, or armour of defence.”

This is a clear violation of the second amendment.

They can outlaw plastic bags if they want to. Crazy, ain’t it?

A City Council is dangerous as any other entity, because any dim bulb can and often gets elected. They have no clue how businesses operate. This won’t work or will have serious unintended consequences.

Philadelphia is now the official land of Pennsylvania lunatics. Were I a business owner there, I would tell them to pound sand. As long as my windows serve their purpose (the purpose I determine, as the store owner), and also serve the purpose of protecting my employees and customers, there is no legitimate or constitutional reason to compel me to obey a stupid, dangerous law that serves no valid public safety or business purpose. Philadelphia, the City of Fools.

And I am a business owner in Maine...which is not quite yet the State of Fools...but the liberals keep trying to get us there.

Actually if you read the story, the ban did NOT pass. The original bill was pulled and what passed was a vague directive for the City Planning and Licensing Board to develop regulations for the use of Bullet Proof Glass by 2021. In other words they just booted the decision to some board who will supposedly make a decision five years from now.
