I (mostly) agree with what you're saying. Speaking only for myself, I would never wish cancer on anyone no matter how much I despised their political beliefs. I want McCain and Biden out of politics, I don't want them dead or physically harmed.
However, I do think that there's something very tasteless of how both Biden and McCain's family are making a public spectacle of their grief and loss. Hugging and crying on TV for the whole world to see is an undignified way to deal with grief and loss, and they shouldn't be surprised if it attracts ridicule rather than sympathy.
Unfortunately, this isn't a problem that's unique to McCain or Biden. Our Social Media culture seems to have turned everyone's private life into a mass spectacle.
