A key FBI agent who had been assigned to investigate Hillary Clinton and later President Trump traded text messages during the 2016 election, not only showing his disdain for Trump and preference for Clinton but also cryptically expressing a need for “an insurance policy” against a Trump presidency, whatever that means.
This doesn’t prove a conspiracy either within the so-called "Deep State" or between it and Clinton, any more than the dribs and drabs leaked by the FBI to news media proves a conspiracy between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump. What it does show is that even in our intelligence agencies and at the FBI, politics is inevitable.
Understanding this, we hope editorial pages and cable news hosts will cease their pearl-clutching every time Republicans criticize the FBI or special prosecutor Robert Mueller for the way in which they are conducting their investigations and for the possibility of conflicts of interest within them. When the critics of the FBI and Mueller say the investigation is touched, perhaps tainted, by politics, they are obviously right.
The leaks themselves — they seem to occur every other day —reflect the political nature of the investigation. What the FBI agents texted about reflects how politically passionate investigators have been.
We’re not asserting that the Trump-Russia investigation is an especially political one. We’re also not saying the president should fire Mueller, which would be both unjustified and politically disastrous, inviting impeachment. The lesson is that politics creeps into federal law enforcement and intelligence, and it is disingenuous and usually partisan dishonesty to suggest that it's not so or doesn't matter.
Politically pushing back, within limits, against an investigation tinged with politics is standard fare and entirely fair. Clinton’s allies blasted former FBI Director James Comey for his investigation into her evasion of public-records and national security laws.
And speaking of the Clintons, younger readers may not recall how ruthless the Clinton administration was in attacking independent counsel Ken Starr, who investigated former President Bill Clinton’s obvious perjury, obstruction of justice, and abuse of power. The Clintons were violent counterpunchers before Trump was, and they made sure anyone who tried to hold them accountable paid the price for such insolence.
Clinton officials such as James Carville and Paul Begala regularly took to cable television shows to attack Starr personally and viciously. The Clinton White House polled daily on Starr’s reputation and practiced every method to bring his approval down, effectively turning him into a partisan punching bag rather than a lawman.
Trump and his White House have not stooped to the Clintons' level and we hope they don't. If congressional Republicans really hope Trump fires Mueller, and they do so because they hope to protect the president rather than precipitate his downfall, they should back off. There have been clear problems with evident political bias within the special counsel's investigation, and it is appropriate that those be exposed and, to the extent they exist, should affect judgement of the counsel's final report.
Yes, everyone agrees that Mueller’s investigation is indeed
‘colored’ by politics. Therefore what?
Mueller apparently is not concerned about being shut down in any significant way, certainly not by the acting “Atty. General”. That is seems, would be the least of his concerns.
The Democrats may criticize this probe, because they are growing impatient for a collection of bloody scalps to gloat over. Wouldn’t it be bizarre if Lois Lerner was found to be working with Mueller as a ‘consultant’? Stay tuned.

I like the terms, “Weaponized IRS and FBI”. (Among other Federal agencies). And, of course, “The Swamp”.
I disagree with the title use of the word “Politics”.
stench of “corruption”, or reeks of “Treason” would be more appropriate.
If the pace of understanding what went on, and is going on, continues as it has in recent days, they will be adjusting the adjectives used in the headlines.
I was waiting for one of the questioners to make the Watergate comparison at yesterdays hearing, comparing a few third-rate burgulars looking for papers to people running the FBI spying and conspiring to use their official duties to bring down a duly-elected president. That will come too, I believe.
