Alabama's special election for U.S. Senate ended in an upset Tuesday night, as Democrat Doug Jones beat Republican Roy Moore in the deeply conservative state.
Texas has a Senate race in 2018, and it will likely be a different story.
Sen. Ted Cruz remains popular in the Lone Star State and has more than $6 million in his campaign coffers.
Cruz was first elected in 2012, pulling off a major upset in defeating then-Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in a Republican primary runoff. Now, Democratic U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, of El Paso, is hoping to pull off an upset of his own. He says he has a straight-forward approach for facing Cruz.
"It is not a sophisticated strategy, and it's as simple and really as old as democracy itself: getting out, getting after it, meeting the people that I want to represent and serve, going to their communities," O'Rourke said.
O'Rourke's campaign is well underway. He is traveling throughout the state and plans to hit all 254 Texas counties. But Cal Jillson, political science professor at Southern Methodist University, does not expect an Alabama-style upset here in Texas.
"Assuming Ted Cruz doesn't make any mistakes in this race, or no serious disqualifying mistakes, he is going to win in the mid-teens probably. O'Rourke is not going to defeat him unless Cruz stumbles," Jillson said.
Last spring, after it appeared O'Rourke was planning to run, Cruz spoke to NBC 5 about the upcoming campaign.
"There is an old phrase that there are two ways to run: scared and unopposed. Until I am the latter, I will continue to be the former, and so I am going to continue to work each and every day to earn the votes, to earn the support of men and women across the state," Cruz said.
On Wednesday, the senator's campaign said they were not concerned that what happened in Alabama would affect this race. His campaign is expected to go into high gear early in the new year.
Cruz has four Republican opponents but none are major names.
"I think what Alabama showed Texas Republican incumbents is that they have got to pay attention, that they have got to run hard, all the way through," Jillson said.
Maybe Bannon and McConnell can screw this one up as well ...They are off to a great start ...Chuck and Nancy are smiling right now
Probably won’t get support from the RNC until he starts kissing McCONnel’s and linda grahams butt.
Trump supporters on FR said he would be kicked out of office.
Oh ok ...still carrying that mattress around on your back ?
If they have a Roy Moore, yes.

It would be crazy to think there is not the same kind of accusations that can be made against cruz. I think they just skimmed the surface during the primaries.
In a couple years. there won’t be any Republicans around.
Stupid and wishful thinking.
Cruz continues to be Cruz and returns to the Senate...
"Alabama Style Upset"
Cruz’s bimbo eruptions are going to dwarf Moore’s issues
Im sure the information against him will be used at the appropriate time
FL is up for grabs, too, with all the Puerto Ricans flooding in. The leaders we have at present will be replaced by foreigners, many classified as illegal, who will install the form of government they love. That is, unless real civil war breaks out and then, the ultimate outcome, as history tells us might be a surprise. Of course, that will not involve most of us, an awfully lot of us will not be here. We have become a drug/alcohol besotted nation, which hates any kind of moral value which would extend to the next generation. Power and sex are the passion and envy is the driver of the vicious basis for each of the hatreds out there. I ask myself, whether something unknown for generations in our nation will beset us, such as an incurable disease which wipes out generations and does not discriminate between the rich and the poor. Or, whether, something else coming from Mother Nature or God, depending on your beliefs, will transpire to punish and restrain the current evil we are seeing, mostly through the MSM, but, through the entertainment industry, also, on a daily basis. It is likely that the most ruthless and the most determined will win in the short run, but the long haul is totally obscured from sight. Right now, much of America is getting ready to observe Christmas and many will honor the true meaning across this beautiful and awesome land. The true nature of one’s heart, if good, cannot be corrupted by evil envy, greed, criminality and immorality. So, may God bless each and everyone this Christmas with his consistent grace and love
Of course Cruz will win and the solution to this other problem is simple. Just don’t nominate kiddie diddlers.
And who gave Alabama the Roy Moore? Many thought Trump was wrong and decided to prove it by pushing Moore over Strange - from all over the nation, then reneging when it came to long term support of Moore.
You guys are forgetting one thing: The Democrats habit for ALWAYS overplaying their hands.
We are reaching Salem Witch Trial levels of hysteria where it is becoming impossible to tell REAL assault/harassment from the BS.
As with race, the Dems will continue to stoke the hysteria to the point that people won’t care and it will backfire in their faces.
In the case of REAL sexual assault, hang the bastard....In the case of MADE UP sexual assault, hang the bastard making the false accusations.
Could NBC lean any further to the left without falling over?
You are assuming they haven’t fallen over already.
