So far as I know, this is the first terrorist incident in America with a Bengali as the perp. One of the reasons they fought for Independence from Pakistan is that they didn't go for the violent brand of Islam and were treated as near apostates by the more Orthodox brand of Islam practiced in Pakistan.

I know one rather well myself. He’s been here at least 30 years and is now a nominal Muslim at best. He’s educated and thoroughly Americanized. I’ve been to dinner with him, also been to an NBA game with him. I’m sure he’s embarrassed today.

Bengalis can be from India or Bangladesh. I am guessing the ones you worked with were probably Indians.
