The Coptic Christian pope has canceled a meeting with the US vice president in Cairo, in protest against Americas move to recognize Jerusalem as Israels capital. Palestinian leader Abbas also snubbed Mike Pence.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Coptic Church said it excused itself from hosting Mike Pence when he visits Egypt, citing US President Donald Trumps decision made at an unsuitable time and without consideration for the feelings of millions of people.
Egypts Coptic Church said it would pray for wisdom and to address all issues that impact peace for the people of the Middle East.
The decision comes a day after Egypts top Muslim cleric Ahmed al-Tayeb also refused to meet Pence.
Egyptian Coptic Christians, the largest religious minority in the region, make up about 10 percent of the countrys 93 million people.
The Coptic Popes refusal to host Pence is largely symbolic but significant, because it demonstrates the Arab solidarity for Palestinians irrespective of religious affiliations.

Having lived in Egypt I am aware the Copts live on the razor’s edge of survival. Was the response cowardly? You can say so, but it was initiated by a Christian leader whose followers have only by the Grace of God and good luck managed to survive over the centuries.
Note the following:
“The Coptic Popes refusal to host Pence is largely symbolic but significant, because it demonstrates the Arab solidarity for Palestinians irrespective of religious affiliations. ”
There is a problem with this. The Copts consider themselves Egyptian, not Arabic.
Oh man! How will the US survive without the support of the Coptic pope?
Well...they are. "Arab" is an ethic identifier and not a religious one. The Coptic Orthodox Church is based in the Arab world. They're Arabs.
“feelings of millions of people”
When Jordan took East Jerusalem in the 48-49 war, it later annexed it and West Bank making them part of Jordan. And what about the Jewish holy sites in East Jerusalem? It denied Jews access to their holy sites in East Jerusalem, which Jews would not again be able to visit until Israel took back East Jerusalem in the 1967 war.
And what about the Muslim holy sites in East Jerusalem? Israel has not denied Muslims access to the Muslim holy sites in East Jerusalem.
The Egyptian Coptic Pope’s concern about the “feelings of millions” is misplaced, because the “feelings” that concern him are misplaced. Israel has proven that.
History demonstrates that Muslims have nothing to fear about access to Muslim holy sites in East Jerusalem under Israeli rule, but Jews have demonstrable concerns about their capital ever being divided again.
They are not Arabs. Did they conquer themselves in 641?
Even Nasser, the national socialist pan-Arab, did not recognize them as Arabs, apart from their Christian beliefs that is.
