Just remember that FDR and the liberals at first adored the Fascists. It wasn’t until later that they realized what they were up to. I think they liked the moniker “socialist” attached to their name.

The German-American Bund esteemed the
Nazis.  The US was not particulary anti-
German in the thirties, so FDR's affinity, if
there was one, paired with the prevailing
isolationism in the US. Draping the
albatross on the liberals' necks might fit
better in their love affair with communism.
