Reintroduction was started on a small scale in the early 1980’s and by the time 10 years had gone by, the reintroduced mountain lions had mated with the lion population further into W. Texas, and set up territories. That connected the populations and re-established a healthy non-related gene pool. Now they are back to stay.
They are also a protected species now-to keep idiots from doing what what was done in the 30’s-making a species extinct is a stupid and lazy solution to a predator issue-keeping your livestock safe behind an electrified fence is a sensible alternative, and there are more than enough deer and small game around here to keep them away from livestock, so they do not come close to humans here like they do in Cali-but they do take wandering pets for fast food-that keeps down the feral dog and cat population...
