Amid the talk of draining swamps, restoring political might to blue-collar America and turning off the spigot of taxpayer cash that showers Washington, a familiar battle cry is ricocheting through this city: Move the bureaucrats out.
It has the ring of a Trumpian fantasy. Dislodge arms of the federal government from Washington and reattach them in faraway places, spreading the wealth generated by these well-paid agency workforces and forcing senior bureaucrats to face the people they affect.

How about Duluth Minnesota out here in flyover country with long winters.
They could move the IRS out to Des Moines, Iowa. It’s a bit of a hub for insurance companies as I recall. There are a couple neighborhoods with really nice houses for the big shots. Seemed like there was a lot of land out by the airport that might be available if they bought out some hog farmers (just going by the smell on a hot day when I passed through).
I spent one delightful winter day in Storm Lake. As we flew out at the end of the day, the wind was blowing so hard that I think we took off before the plane engines started.
I felt just like that late one night in 1965 way out in the middle of 'no-where' Utah.
A sensation so powerful that it is still with me today.(I felt like I was amoungst the stars)
“Not in my back yard. We in their right mind would want government workers in their proximity?”
They’re everywhere and they’re smarter and better educated than us deplorables.
"Brasília was planned and developed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location."
"The centers of all three branches of the federal government of Brazil are in Brasília, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. The city also hosts 124 foreign embassies.[6] Brasília International Airport connects the capital to all major Brazilian cities and many international destinations, and is the third busiest airport in Brazil."
>>(Gotta find some way to keep the White House, though.)

From what I keep hearing, it is cold, drafty, rat-infested, and in great disrepair.
What better qualified President than our dear Mr. Trump to design and build a brand new White House?
It would be BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!! : )
Bingo!!! Tent city in AZ!
Glad to see The Borg representative weighing in.
You’ll forgive me if I continue to resist assimilation.
The actual functioning Constitutional parts of government could be moved in high style for 1 billion dollars.
Yeah! Brasilia, look how well that worked out for them!
At least the airplane worked well...
I think at least all regulators should be moved to Barrow AK.
Yeah. If a new White House needs to be designed and built, nobody better than Trump and his family. I just hope he wouldn’t decorate it like his gilded NY apartment. Gauche, wretched excess.
I disagree with the “smarter and better educated”. I “lived” in the WDC area for over 30 years, have 3 college degrees and provided professional services to the population there. “Smarter and better”...I think not.
A twenty year plan it should be.
It would start with executive departments and agencies with state and DOD being the last to go, and maybe even no sooner than the “White House” itself.
The final moves would be the White House, Congress, State & DOD and likely together. (the planning for them is, in my opinion, why it would take at least 20 years, and why they would be moved last).
The D.C. monuments would stay, as would the White House, and possibly the present Capital building, as part of a new national park. That park would comprise contiguous land and what is not within it would be returned to the states of Maryland and Virginia; from whom the land was in part acquired and in part donated. (that would also solve the issue of “voting” for current D.C. residents. They would be represented in Congress by Maryland or Virginia reps.
But guess what, idiots that we all are.
Corruption and the corruption related to the focus of power is not about location. It’s about human nature. Go ahead and move the federal government out of Washington D.C. In a very short time it will be clear that the concentration of power and the corruption with it will just move to the new place(s).
Better than moving the location would be a wholesale sacking of the whole federal bureaucracy, so it can be rebuilt, personnel wise, from the ground up. The “swamp” is the people in D.C., not the location.
The best way to move government offices out of DC is to eliminate them completely. Second best? Move them to remote parts of Alaska. Let’s see how motivated the Swamp creatures are to “help” us, when their own comfort is at stake.
Perfect!
There was a discussion on FR last week about horrific traffic on the highways here around DC.
Moving some agencies out seemed to be a pretty good solution. Moving small portions out slowly would give the grossly overpriced housing markets time to adjust
Maryland and No. VA red ??? Sounds like a win!
In this age of net communication it sounds very doable.
“Promote that guy”.
I just feel sorry for the states that would get the federal employees. It’s like exporting toxic waste to a neighboring state.
Johnson City looks good to me.
