Are these not the same people who wanted to make someone who was on Free Republic read something on Democratic Underground to, you know, make sure they get a fair and balanced view of things? We have a lot more to fear First Amendment-wise from the likes of Google and Facebook than we do from some ISP who is trying to make sure VOIP calls happens in realtime.

At first, AT&T & Verizon & Comcast didn't have an oligopoly position in providing internet access. With many providers, there was sufficient competition. Dialup was over phones lines protected by common-carrier regs. But note that much of this was allowed because AT&T etc. were required to to provide service to these competitors.
Most of the CLEC & other acronym competitors are gone, squeezed out. Dialup ISPs are gone.
My bet is that the internet providers will encounter an over-whelming urge to declare that some bits are harder to ship and they have to charge more for them.
The rationale will be that in order to prevent loss of money by folks who drop cable TV in favor of internet only, they will need to introduce cable-like package pricing to general internet access. $10/month for fast ESPN, $10/month for fast HBO, etc. And of course, more for on-demand.
The freewheeling part of the internet no longer includes connectivity to your home. Access to your home has got gatekeepers now, and they want to be paid.
Either we get net-neutrality, or we will need a new Carterphone decision that lets other providers have access to the connection to your house.

FR isn’t gonna slow down, is it? I’m not very well versed on this issue.
