The Democrats’ Dangerous Obsession With Impeachment
New Republic ^ | December 5,2017 | Jeet Heer

Posted on 12/05/2017 9:01:09 AM PST by Hojczyk

Democrats win the House of Representatives in 2018 and have the necessary votes for impeachment. But even in that best-case scenario, in which Democrats win every toss-up race for the Senate, they would still be well short of the votes they need in the Senate. Which means that kicking Trump out of the White House by necessity has to be a bipartisan effort with significant Republican buy-in.

The most promising route for stopping Trump, then, is through the ballot box. Democrats need a convincing platform and effective organization to win elections at every level. If the party can win back Congress in 2018, it can immediately start hamstringing Trump’s presidency without resorting to the unlikely path of impeachment. Democrats can launch investigations into Trump’s many improper acts. They can stall his nominees, especially in the courts. They can also start laying down rules for reining in the imperial presidency, including the thermonuclear monarchy, so that no future commander-in-chief has the dangerous power Trump possesses.

Impeachment fetishists seem to think that the overriding problem of American politics is that Trump is president. By this analysis, the president is a dangerous outlier whose removal would restore America to normality. But the problem isn’t just Trump; it’s also the Republican Party. Trump is only dangerous because he’s the standard-bearer of a party that has unified control of the government and is willing to stand by Trump no matter what. A Democratic agenda of reining in presidential power will give more lasting victories than mere impeachment, which is unlikely to succeed and would only address a symptom, not the cause, of the cancer that’s ravaging American politics.

Sadly, they would have more than enough Republican scumbags to vote with them to oust Trump. Probably several more than the 67 needed.

No reference to seriousness (or lack) of the charges.

They wanted to impeach Nixon in his first term, Reagan in his first year, Bush etc etc.

Democrats are sore losers and have been for over half a century.

Democrat leaders in MI, WI, OH, PA are telling national leaders that if you impeach Trump we will never win an election in any of these states again. Not even for Dog Catcher.

Trump isn’t getting impeached, ever. Just so silly and retarded.

What’s funny is that the Dems didn’t learn from the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The American public at the time decided that Clinton didn’t deserve to be removed from office, and then took it out on the GOP at the next election.

So, Dems, keep it up, act like total retards....because it’s destroying you, not Trump.

Of course this is not a problem when the Democrats control the government.

The Republican Party needs to morph into the Trumpist Party. Take no prisoners, kick butts, take names, push back, have fun doing it!

And what else is new. This has been in the Democrat playbook for years. Of course only to be used against Republicans.

Nobody can even articulate what impeachment would be about. No crime committed, no harm done, no scandal, no paperwork violations, nothing. What’s to impeach over? “We don’t like him, and he talks funny”?

A Democratic agenda of reining in presidential power...

A comical idea, considering how Obama ran the country without a single check on his power.

A high crime and misdemeanor will be posited, fine tuned and then propagated ad nauseum in the compliant press. It will no doubt be fashioned into a pithy phrase so that it can be repeated and repeated and repeated.

Well when Trump fires Herr Mueller everyone should call their congressman that you better not support any stupid impeachment call, or the Cong critters will be looking for a new job next November.

Trump can stop this by instructing Sessions to open a new Special Counsels with Hillary and others in mind. He can close the current Special Counsel is a hot second but he just does not realize how damaging this Counsel is to himself and his Administration. Trump is foolish and still playing around with foreign crap and ignoring America. What the hell is he doing?

I am not even sure why folks post horsecrap like this here. Turds like this don’t understand.....we don’t like Trump. His only redeeming quality is that he actually does most of what he says and fights for what he believes.

Yeah, I caught that too. Big panic about "Imperial Presidency" and "unchecked presidential power".

Did the rules change when Trump was inaugurated? Doesn't he have the same constraints his predecessor had?

When seven different countries were bombed by the US, without declaration of war, without even consulting Congress, did the left rant about Obama's out-of-control warmongering?

When Bammy threatened to circumvent Congress with his "I've got a pen, and I've got a phone" threat, were progressives concerned he had too much power?

When the Vietnam Memorial and National Parks were shut down to punish Republicans, did anyone on the left complain?
