I know, for two years I gave tours in a Navy R4D (DC-3) that was one of the early aircraft in the Berlin airlift. The plane was based at Marathon, Florida Keys in the Experimental Aircraft Association's aviation museum.
Every German visitor, and their were hundreds; even teen girls knew about the airlift. And they knew who flew the planes, and about the "Candy Bombers" who dropped tons of sweets from the approaching transports. It was the most uplifting part of my day!
