Florida Senator Marco Rubio admits that the Republican tax cut plan to aid corporations and the wealthy will require cuts to Social Security and Medicare to pay for it.
Rubio told reporters this week that in order to address the federal deficit, which will grow by at least $1 trillion if the tax plan passes, Congress will need to cut entitlement programs such as Social Security. Advocates for the elderly and the poor have warned that entitlement programs would be on the chopping block, but this is the first time a prominent Republican has backed their claims.
We have to do two things. We have to generate economic growth which generates revenue, while reducing spending. That will mean instituting structural changes to Social Security and Medicare for the future, Rubio told a crowd at a Politico conference. Rubio's talk of structural change is vague, but will likely include changing the rate and age of Social Security and Medicare payouts.

If tax cuts supposedly will coat a trillion, here’s how to make it up.
Services to illegals cost the USA
$134 Billion a year.
Cut it all off. USA first. Do you really want to pay for that?
I really doubt that, when I see “Republicans dissing Seniors” ...I recognize it immediately, page 6 of the Democrat strategy book. Old Old Strategy.
Count me in. At least a posting from one of those sources needs to be headered with a warning about propaganda and lies source.
> What is the point in posting media empire lies? <
I want to agree with you. When I read MSM stuff, it raises my my blood pressure. Sometimes I’ve got to go watch cat videos on YouTube just to cool off.
However, a good discussion forum cannot be just an echo chamber. Your suggestion would inadvertently turn Free Republic into an echo chamber.
Yeah...”NEWSWEEK” is a PR arm of the DEMOCRAT Party...
What in the wide wide world of sports is “Income Security” (8% of total)? Congressional salaries?
The big lie is that the two are connected. It has been clear since their conception that “entitlement” social programs are the bane to balancing the budget. Tax cuts or not, these programs will bankrupt the country if not reigned in. It’s common sense, which is in short supply these days.
“Mariner, you are continuing your crusade of nonstop leftist propaganda.”
Thats funny right there.
So, you actually heard him say it in context?
Interesting that this was being discussed 17 years ago — the bureaucrats were stealing from the fund back then and nothing was ever done.
As you can see, the “direct Rubio quote” does not in any way, shape, manner, or form match the headline and the narrative of the article - but that isn’t the point - to the left it is the narrative - and only the narrative - that counts. And a lot of the posters apparently don’t even know that the tax bill has passed and are reading the headline as though Rubio is trying to block it when it is already through with his support.
https://www.cagw.org/reporting/pig-book there are many websites out there reporting the billions in got. waste. They need to start cutting there before ss.
Yes, your behavior has been funny - indeed, bizarre.
I'll be crucified for this again ...
We have two choices:
1) Get the government OUT of the retirement plan business. It's unconstitutional and the government is no good at it. End Social Security. End Medicare.
2) Bankruptcy and economic collapse.
Choose wisely. Soon. Before choosing is OBE.
The headline says CUT. The actual quote is restructure which isn’t a cut.
Sheesh. Politico is politics. Left wing style.
Marco needs to stay away from the swampsters or he will get swallowed.
If they were serious about reforming SS they would first get it out of the general fund and back in its own accounts and at least let it draw interest. If they had never thrown it in the general fund the interest on all that money would have been astronomical.
STEP NO. 1
Stop providing Social Security, Welfare, Food Stamps, housing, medical care, college, etc. to illegal aliens.
“So, you actually heard him say it in context?”
No, obviously not.
But he is directly quoted, and he is right.
These programs are on a death trajectory. They must be completely re-tooled.
I fail to understand what’s so controversial about that.
Yes, and some people deserve and need SSI. I fully support your need. I have a disabled son, and We fought on his behalf for more than a year. He has severe physical and mental issues. I guarantee, that for white US citizens, SSI is very difficult to obtain and what my 29 YO son received barely buys his basic necessities, such as food, water, and medical supplies. It pays nothing for shelter, utilities, and transportation— I still pay for all of that.
