Well the concept kind of grew from a simple printer driver. Now it’s got to be able to tell you that it needs ink or paper or whatever, and sit waiting for requests from the printer to save scanned images, and the like.

Yeah. It's amazing how one little print driver can talk with just about any printer on the planet with Linux, but you need the driver and 5 'support programs' with MS-Windows.
