NBC has fired longtime ‘Today’ host Matt Lauer following allegations of workplace misconduct, the network announced on Wednesday.
“We are devastated,” ‘Today’ co-host Savannah Gutherie said in a visually emotional statement. “All we can say is we are heartbroken.”
Gutherie said that NBC News chairman Andy Lack informed employees of the decision on Tuesday night after having received a complaint about Lauer's behavior the night before. She read Lack's note on-air, noting that while the network says it had never received a complaint about Lauer before, it has "reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.
"We received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Layer," she said. "It represented, after a serious review, a clear violation of our company's standards. As a result, we've decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he has been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident. our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected. and any action that runs counter to our core values are met with consequences. we are saddened by these events. we will face it together as a news organization and do it as transparent a manner as we can.

yup...i’ve worked for the same company and in the same office for almost 31 years...new people think i’m grumpy and unfriendly because i don’t speak to them- but you know what?
i purposely keep my mouth shut for all these year and don’t speak unless i am spoken to for fear that something i say may be taken the wrong way...
Wow was my reaction. He’s a heavyweight. They must have had some pretty convincing evidence that the incident mentioned wasn’t the only one.
