NBC is alleging that this is the first time they’ve had a complaint about him.

It does seem odd that NBC would fire their most prominent talking head due to one complaint.

I'd say that would depend upon the nature of the complaint. But I was thinking more in terms of Lauer's behavior over the years. This didn't start overnight.
