JUST IN: North Korea fires a ballistic missile - news agency Yonhap, citing South Korean military

pretty hefty vertical. Highest to date
Yep.
My thoughts as well.
10X higher than the orbit of the ISS
Preparations for a high altitude nuke test is to be truly concerned about and also a electro-magnetic pulse, or EMP, attack could wipe out the electrical grids across the US. North Korea specifically mentioned the possibility of an EMP attack on the US.
He’s developing an EMP, to bring one down directly over Kansas from high orbit, right on the center of the country for maximum damage.
No, not all missiles are ballistic.
I’ve been to Seoul. It’s very tall, and very dense. 30,000 shells fired would cause tremendous damage very fast. “Millions dead” might be excessively pessimistic, but is within the scope that must be considered.
Yea, the poster asked me for a pic a non ballistic missile so I gave him one.
Wake me up with they have 150-300 ICBMs with 10-15MT warheads....until then....they can't do much....emp wise. half a dozen 50kt terror nukes? yeah. I'd say they have that.
EMP is the holeshot. However they have to have a functional warhead and reliable rocket. Since all nuke tests have been undergtound and Kim has threatened an above ground (likely airburst) test, high apogee launches need to be spot on. If I were Japan, I’d worry about EMP effects, unless the blast occurs significantly high up (way beyond 250 miles - 1/10th today’s launch)
ONE?! He better have a multi megaton warhead if ONE warhead is to do critical damage via EMP.
Well I’m sure that’s the idea. Why use one when you could use 7?
They have already demonstrated the capability to launch satellites into polar orbit with their 2 KA series, and at the optimal altitude. Pending question is can he lift a warhead into same orbit and then have it go off as desired?
Not necessarily, one tuned to generate an abundance of gamma radiation (the big player in EMP formation), one in the hundreds of KT range could work.
“If these numbers are correct, then if flown on a standard trajectory rather than this lofted trajectory, this missile would have a range of more than 13,000 km (8,100 miles). This is significantly longer than North Koreas previous long range tests, which flew on lofted trajectories for 37 minutes (July 4) and 47 minutes (July 28). Such a missile would have more than enough range to reach Washington, DC.
We do not know how heavy a payload this missile carried, but given the increase in range it seems likely that it carried a very light mock warhead. If true, that means it would not be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to this long distance, since such a warhead would be much heavier.”
