Donald Trump has been criticised for using a racial slur during an event honouring Native American veterans.
The US president was welcoming three Navajo code talkers from the Second World War to the Oval Office on Monday afternoon when he referred to Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic senator, as "Pocahontas".
During remarks praising their service, he said: "You were here long before any of us were here. Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas. But you know what, I like you."
Two Second World War Navajo "code talkers" stood at the podium, with a third seated in a wheelchair as Mr Trump made the remarks, which were greeted with awkward silence.
They were among 29 young volunteers from the Navajo tribe who joined the Marines in 1942 and created a secret code for the military using the Navajo language as a code.
The president has repeatedly mocked the Massachusetts senator for claims she made about being part Native American.

Put yourself in the Navajo’s place. It is well known and irrefutably established that Warren has zero Native American blood. (She had an ancestor who participated in the Trail of Tears...as one of the officials who drove the tribes off their land and onto the reservations—those that survived, anyway.) (She also had a relative who shot a Native American for riding drunk. Fwiw.)
It’s established that Harvard listed Warren, whose academic credentials were meagre, as a minority. Warren also contributed (stolen) recipes to a cookbook whose sole contributors were Native Americans.
She is a fraud. This is known among Native Americans. Do you really believe they mind seeing her called out?
In their place, I wouldn’t mind. I’d love it.
Trump knows his audience.

That's the point, isn't it? Fauxahontas, Liewatha, etc. get the job done a whole lot more clearly without impugning an actual person (who, by all accounts, was actually alright, and, eventually a Christian)
Sadly, I don’t think this one will turn out well for Trump. Making the Pocahontas reference in front of American Indians, and highly respected Code Talkers at that, was a mistake. There was apparently a dead silence after he said that.
In short, Trump forgot the first rule of public speaking: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE!

because the whole point is that W is a fake, a liar, someone who falsely rips off the Indian heritage thing for her own personal, lying benefit. Her conduct is an INSULT to the “Native Americans”, imho. This needs to be emphasized..

I don’t have any idea why the name of Pocahontas is regarded a slur! It never has been seen as such in history. Why now? A stupid question, right?
