I don’t support Franken in any way and I especially
reject his politics. However, in terms of career
choices he is similar to Trump and so many other men
and even some women who decide to enter politics
as elected officials after careers in other endeavors.
We are seeing today that the behavior expectations of
politicians is different than other vocations and a
person’s pre political life is fair game and that is
as it should be, I guess. I don’t defend those who
may have had a morally dubious pre political career.
Many others who enter politics later in life were
morally upstanding throughout their lives so good
for them.
On the other hand, and this is the whole point of
this post: consider Bill Clinton. Here is a man who
spent his whole adult life as a politician. He always
knew that standards were higher in his chosen career
but he chose the moral habits of a dog for his
personal code of conduct and he got away with it.
It simultaneously disgusts and fascinates me.
