The family of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano broke down in court Monday as they for the first time watched her accused killer detail to cops the tortured final minutes of their daughter’s life.
Cathie Vetrano let out an anguished moan in between sobs as she heard Chanel Lewis calmly confess to the brutal August 2016 beating, in which he broke her daughter’s teeth and kept beating her until she lost consciousness before strangling her.
At one point, the mom brought the foot-long, golden crucifix she routinely totes to court to her face, watching the footage through tears. Her sister Tana Vetrano sat frozen, her teeth bared at Lewis as she cried.

I sincerely believe that the family of murder victims should be allowed 10 minutes with the convict, along with the tools or implements of their choice.
God, what a horrible story. And this idiot thinks restitution can get him off? He deserves dying.
Our system of justice is nothing of the kind. Hammurabi had it right.

It’s worse than you think. Her father often went jogging with her, but for some reason, not that day. He will live the rest of his life thinking if only he had gone with her, his beloved daughter would still be alive. I’m not saying it’s true, but he will probably never truly be happy again.

I prosecuted a case where a guy stabbed a model home salesperson to death; she was very pretty, he was infatuated with her, she turned him down...and he went into her office, hit her in the head with a rock and stabbed her 55 times.
At her trial, her father, who was a retired phone company executive, wandered the halls; a clearly broken man. He died less than a year after the trial. So did the defendant’s mother. They were his uncharged second and third victims.
What people who go through these horrible tragedies must endure is unimaginable.
How much time did he get?

This is one of the hardest things for me as a Christian to come to grips with, I should believe that all people are redeemable, but I can not help but think that some are born demon spawn and have hearts as black as the deepest depths of Hell.
65 years, the statutory maximum for a murder without death penalty or LWOP aggravators. Plead insanity, the jury didn’t buy it. They didn’t even find him mentally ill. Just plain flat guilty. Probably the statement to the detective who asked “So she was dead when you left her?” “No, she was conscious, crying, and breathing really hard.”
He killed her on the afternoon of June 30. That spring the legislature had amended the death penalty/LWOP statute to add “burned, tortured or mutilated the victim while the victim was alive” as a qualifying factor. The 55 stab wounds would have constituted mutilation. But that statute didn’t go into effect until midnight on July 1, eight hours after he killed her.

In what context did he say that to the detective? Did he confess? Is he still alive?
If the vic was black and the perp was white there would be blood in the streets. You’ve gotta understand the minorities have a perfect right to be angry at whites, and to want to cut them up, just not the other way round. If you are white you supposed to hate youself. In fact you supposed to even off youself.
Yes, he confessed that night. He stabbed himself in the leg in his killing frenzy, and that night the pain got to him so he turned himself in.
