Heres The Complete Transcript Of Sen. Al Frankens Tribute To David Letterman That Got Cut From The Kennedy Center Broadcast
Tonight, your local PBS affiliate will be airing the Kennedy Center special honoring David Letterman with the 20th Annual Mark Twain Prize for Humor. Youll see comedy stars like Jimmy Kimmel, Norm Macdonald, Bill Murray, Amy Schumer, John Mulaney, and more fete the late night titan with speeches in his honor. What you wont see is what embattled Senator Al Franken had to say. The former Saturday Night Live writer and performers tribute was cut from the broadcast in the wake of the allegations that he conducted sexual misconduct. Decider received an advance press screener of the event that still included Frankens segment. So what did you miss?
After a Martin Short musical number enumerating Lettermans various big contributions to the late night genre, Senator Franken was going to be introduced as a man who was just crowned Mr. Deep State 2017, before welcoming his comedy friends to Washington, DC and launching into his speech:

Wow, that’s some uncomedic comedy. The only person I’d be interesting in seeing is Norm McDonald, who got fired from SNL for a news update where he was talking about Bill Clinton, and said, “You know he’s a murderer, right?”
PBS using our tax dollars to air another Pinkopalooza.
They could argue that they cut it because it wasnt funny.
I’ve never heard that was the reason he was fired. He said was fired because he made too many O.J. jokes, and Ohlmeyer was a friend of O.J.’s.
Nope. I saw the episode and cracked up when Norm said what he said. This was the east coast feed which was three hours before the west coast airing. An NBC vice-president in Los Angeles saw the east coast feed and blew a gasket. The west coast feed was redacted to eliminate the comment and Norm was fired the next morning.
He said that on an episode of The View.
Where’s the funny in that lineup?
I’ve often wondered if it was an ad lib as I can’t imagine Lorne Michaels allowing it.
Walters reaction in that clip is priceless.
She doesn’t know what to do, does she? Talk about being blindsided!
I forgot that the harpy Joy Behar was on the View even back then on 2000.
Yechhh!
Letterman admitted to sex with one or more of his subordinates before he retired. Had a weeping apology if I recall. Surprised this wasnt brought up.
I wonder if he asked David letterman to rehearse the kiss with him?
Man, what a bunch of vicious, bitter *unts.
It was OJ that he kept striking at — and the Prez of NBC got tired of it (I think he was buddies with OJ). OJ had hosted SNL way back in the dim mists of forgotten antiquity, doing his monologue as a black Conehead. But that was many years before he murdered his wife and the eyewitness.
Surprised? Not me. It won’t emerge in the broadcast, either. There’s some mystery that it wasn’t reprised and then used as a reason to withdraw the Mark Twain prize before it was awarded — but after all, adultery isn’t the same thing as sexual harassment, and yes, what he did was ALSO involving a subordinate, but...
OH, okay.
