President Donald Trump says he should have left three UCLA basketball players accused of shoplifting in China in jail.
Trump's tweet Sunday comes after the father of player LiAngelo Ball minimized Trump's involvement in winning the players' release in comments to ESPN.
"Who?" LaVar Ball told ESPN on Friday, when asked about Trump's involvement in the matter. "What was he over there for? Don't tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out."
Trump has said he raised the players' detention with Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) during the leaders' recent meeting in Beijing.
The players returned to the U.S. last week. They have been indefinitely suspended from the team.
Says Trump: "Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!"

They did. Trump thanked them back in a tweet and the issue WAS DEAD. It was the father who resurrected it with his comments on MSESPN.
They aren’t responsible for what the dip of an old man said.
Actually, they are. The father has 3 sons he's trying to get rich off of. One is in the NBA, one is at UCLA, and one is in high school committed to UCLA. And he has turned his sons into a reality show.
Never mind that the father never played a down in the NFL and had a brief, lackluster career in the NBA. He was bragging about how he could have beaten Michael Jordan and his son was better than Curry. Typical loser who never accomplished anything in his life yet is making money off his own children.

I couldn’t disagree more. They’re going to say the same thing no matter how “statesmanlike” he might be. He has no reason to be casting pearls before the media swine.

Most AMERICANS would have enough good sense and respect for RED CHINA’s laws not to steal stuff from their stores.

I wonder how much it cost Trump in negotiations points? Only for it to be tossed back in Trump’s face by old Daddyo.
Maybe Trump should tell China that if they want to make an example of this ingrate, that he will abide by any extradition request.
You'd think that coaches would give their players a very strong warning before they go to a foreign country that the crimes they can get away with in the US may land them in prison in another country. They must assume that as star athletes they can shoplift and there won't be any negative consequences.
There was a similar incident (larger scale theft) by band members from an HBCU university (Texas Southern) some years ago in Japan. The Japanese and Chinese when they hear about these incidents may generalize and assume all Americans consider such behavior acceptable.
These bread-and-circuses ‘hoodrats are an embarrassment to this country; Red China should’ve caned them (a la Singapore) at least. Just another very public message of lowered expectations...
Coaches are told to bend over backwards for these college revenue sources - ignoring horrible/non-existent grades and rapes as well...
