What the general said wasn’t wrong but it was stated in a public manner and misused by enemies of the president. And it does not contribute to our national security to be stating policy and procedures in regard to nuclear weapons at a sensitive time. His statement has been quoted by the NYTimes, Reuters, the Star and is anyone doubting that Rocketman is listening?

It was a poor choice on the part of the four star to be making these statements rather than demurring and telling the questioner that firm procedures are in place.

The general answered a question and made fools of those trying to trap him as well as the idiots criticizing him here.
Hyten was responding to a question about testimony by former STRATCOM commander retired Gen. Robert Kehler before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this week. Kehler said that nuclear operators would refuse to implement an unlawful order. Hyten agreed, and argued that the process in place to launch a nuclear strike would prevent such a situation from arising in the first place.

But I called a friend and if you get a chance to look up JP 3-41 you’ll find a multi page text of almost all of the situation determination for the deployment of NBC materials with the obvious desire against harm. You may also wish to open it to I-29, which identifies risk assessment and leads into the relationships of the president and all the commands to include all branches and homeland security. It’s a large manual, but it stresses the situation the Joint Chief of Staff general was required to accomplish. There are so many things that can go undone.
Many people think the military is some openly self running product that can do what they want. They are governed by regs, military and DOD, congressional and presidential dictation, and manuals that in most cases line by line tell them what they are going to do. And until they can satisfy civilian sources like congress and the president, their hands are tied unless they are under direct attack that warrants the strongest of response and all the players in the overall command are deceased. And even then it will probably be a wasted effort as the cat will probably be out of the bag before that exists.
It isn’t easy to get a nuke launched.

After I heard about this story I decided to look into General Hyten’s history and ended up watching a good part of his 2014 Senate confirmation hearing on C-Span.
There were two times the question of ‘who has the authority to order a nuclear strike’ came up during the hearing, once in passing and once upon direct questioning from Sen Manchin of West Virginia.
Both times General Hyten expressed his understanding that the authority to launch a nuclear strike rests solely with the Commander and Chief as per the US Constitution, and both times there was one Senator who interrupted and tried to ‘correct’ him.
For 50 bonus points and to move on to the next round, name that Senator.

Sen John McCain has had visions of grandeur for many years. I regret to admit I voted for him back in his failed attempt to become CINC back in 2008. Reminding the general that only congress can declare war is a silly but insightful comment by him and another example of his disdain for #45 who did what he was incapable of doing.
Thanks for posting the confirmation hearing. But I still think the general was in error to try to explain procedures and to answer a loaded question posed to him.
Watching the 2014 confirmation hearing I’m reassured that Gen. Hyten won’t try to superimpose his “wisdom” on top of the President’s.
McCain however is a corrupt and malignant politician who I’m convinced tanked the 2008 election in favor of Obama.
The world will be a better place without him in it.

Was the General giving a lecture at a service academy? No. The general’s response was improper because it was a politically charged hypothetical question asked in a nest of Trump haters. He knew what answer these Trumper haters wanted and gave it to them anyway. That is unforgivable.
