Presumption of innocence is rarely practiced anymore.
I have to agree with you both. Overly aggressive DAs seek convictions not in order to pursue justice but so they can campaign as being tough on crime. Because juries bring presumption of guilt into the courtroom they convict the accused and mandatory sentencing removes judges' discretion. End result: There are sickos running loose while at the same time there are innocent people serving time.
Add to this health care workers who may be excessively vigilant in looking for signs of abuse because their jobs (and possibly freedom) could be at risk if they miss it.
Dont get me wrong, if this guy is guilty, he should rot in hell but as a parent, its also not hard to visualize how an innocent tragedy could be turned into a Kafka-esque nightmare at the brands of overzealous medical workers and law-enforcement officials who will always give them the benefit of doubt.
