North Korea defector who crossed DMZ 'was shot five times'
14 November 2017
A North Korean who defected at the heavily guarded Demilitarised Zone was shot at least five times and is in a critical condition, South Korea says.
The soldier crossed to the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area (JSA) in the village of Panmunjom on Monday.
He had driven near the JSA, but had to finish his journey by foot when a wheel came loose, the South said.
North Korean troops shot at him 40 times - but he made it across and was found under a pile of leaves, it added.
About 1,000 people from the North flee to the South each year - but very few defect via the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which is one of the world's most heavily guarded strips of land.
It is even more unusual for North Koreans to cross at the JSA, which is a tourist attraction, and the only portion of the DMZ where both forces stand face-to-face.
North and South Korea are technically still at war, since the conflict between them ended in 1953 with a truce and not a formal peace treaty.
Five bullets extracted
South Korea's military gave more details of the soldier's condition on Tuesday.
"Until this morning, we heard he had no consciousness and was unable to breathe on his own - but his life can be saved," military official Suh Uk told lawmakers.
Doctors had extracted five bullets from his body, but suspected there were two more inside, he added.

Prayers for the fella. He was either brave or insane to attempt it.
It sounds from the article, like they removed five bullets, but he may still have two inside him, from the article.
So it sounds like, maybe seven bullets.
Maybe.
“but had to finish his journey by foot when a wheel came loose,”
Key point to take away here. Disrepair as the state of the military equipment to the rank and file. Just like all of the hollow shells of outwardly appearing construction in the capital, the parade show pieces only need to crawl along at march pace.
Let’s turn up the juice and see what shakes loose!
Beetleguise
Asian language to English translations are incredibly bad and quite funny.
> North Korean troops shot at him 40 times
Will they get an extra few grams of rice for shooting him or less for not killing him?
5 bullet wounds on first observation --> operation --> 5 bullets extracted --> during the operation, doctors found out that there may be two more inside, contrary to initial report.
So maybe shot 7 times, but it's not confirmed yet.
Footnote: another operation was done to the soldier. Doctors' efforts were hampered by unexpectedly large amount of (intestinal) parasites pouring out from ruptured internal organs, and damaging organ tissues, according to a press briefing done by a doctor operated on him. He cited a 11-inch long parasite which he has never seen from S. Korean subjects.
When I visited S. Korea last year, one tour guide said that her attitude towards war with the North is, “Bring it on!”
If the North Koreans are in such bad health, I see a reason for her optimism. That, plus there are about twice as many South Koreans as North Koreans.
Doctors’ efforts were hampered by unexpectedly large amount of (intestinal) parasites pouring out from ruptured internal organs,
So the state of medical care in their military is up to par...

#7 They will be killed for failing to kill him.
