Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday publicly floated the idea of getting Attorney General Jeff Sessions to take his old Senate seat, as Republicans continue to seek alternatives to Judge Roy Moore.
McConnell made the comments to the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council while talking about who could mount a successful write-in campaign, like Sen. Lisa Murkowski did in Alaska in 2010. McConnell said she was popular in the state and was universally well-known, qualities that Sessions has in Alabama.
"The name being most often discussed may not be available, but the Alabamian who would fit that standard would be the attorney general," McConnell said. "He's totally well-known and is extremely popular in Alabama."
"That obviously would be a big move for him and for the president," McConnell said. He said President Trump is discussing what to do in the Alabama race "in great detail" as he wraps up his Asia trip.
McConnell conceded that he isn't sure Sessions would come back after leaving earlier this year to take over as head of the Department of Justice. Some reports were already saying Monday that Sessions had no interest.

You and me both buddy. Keep up the good work!
And notice that Sessions has an easy time covering for the Deep State. He smiles. His eyes twinkle. He knows the Deep State has his back and he's comfortable with it.
Sessions and Rosenstein are two untouchable rogues, for the Deep State, inside the executive branch. They answer to nobody but the Deep State. They are extra Constitutional. They are exhibit A of everything that is wrong with Washington.
Deflection.
They get one and only one chance to drain the swamp.
Sessions is no dummy and has had a stellar career in law enforcement.
He and Trump are going about this just fine.
If Trump did not have confidence in Sessions, he would gone before the day ends.
Remember what happened to Tom Price. Out in a day.
I have in Trump and Sessions.
...Mitch must know, through internal polls, that Roy Moore is going to win...

Thats been my impression from the escalating hysteria of the GOPe Swamp Creatures led, this time, by Mitch McConnell. What Mitch is trying to show, according to Rush, is that he is a scorpion and not a turtle. Hes actually a weasel that looks like a turtle.
Using a leftist slogan that really isnt appropriate for the left, the fearless, uncowed citizens of Alabama are showing that THE PEOPLE, UNITED, WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED. FReepers, we need to stay united and not allow ourselves to be stampeded. Lets call out any defeatists that pop up in our midst.
Sessions is not a Deep State PLANT.
Oh, please—stop with the hysterics.
You’re from Alabama—you know Sessions has never been a Deep State anything.
He has had a stellar career in law enforcement.
He was one of the first people to endorse Trump—Why? Because of Trump’s stance on immigration—which only Sessions talked about for years in the Senate and everyone ignored him.
I did not see a wimp, coward, wuss or Swamp creature today.
I saw a man who knows exactly what is coming down the pike, and he played the Dems like fiddles.
They think he is the dumb redneck hayseed, aw shucks guy.
But leopards do not change their spots. Sessions is still the straight arrow who is smarter than all of them.
A good Christian man with a great reputation—especially in Alabama.
So, stay tuned.
Sessions recused himself under oath. Sessions falsely testifying under oath doesn't make for a successful "deflection" plan. There are legal consequences to doing that. You can't have an AG who recused himself, supervising an investigation and prosecution.
And you can't have a DAG, Rod Rosenstein supvervising an investigation and prosecution about a case that he was closely involved with. He will protect himself and his cohorts.
It's just that simple.
McConnell acts like he is doing the bidding of the Democrats. Could it be he is under the control of blackmail?
*********************************
Could be. But what he has is more like a partnership with the RATS. Hes gotten rich off of his Swamp service.
The deflection is not with the recusal.
The recusal was going to happen, and I don’t think Sessions surprised Trump with that. It was known he would have to do this, even while he was undergoing the nomination.
The recusal issue is with the 2016 election.
All else is fair game.
Just shows that many swamp creatures are very much afraid of Attorney General Sessions and want him gone. Behind his strangely quiet calmness, something is in the works.
The Sessions recusal was about all issues that the Trump campaign brought up about Hillary.
That would include the email server, Uranium One and the Clinton Foundation...etc.
Then Trump just never gets around to finding a permanent AG and Moore can start going after some Swamp scalps that everyone is hoping for.
It's a little rough around the edges but it's an idea....
Sessions did not recuse himself from any of those items.
The email issues, CF, and the U1 deal all predate the 2016 campaign.
Sessions only recused himself from issues concerning the Trump campaign itself:
They already have it, it's just that some of them are calling themselves Republicans.
Not correct.
(Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing Transcript | Jan. 10, 2017 | excerpt)
GRASSLEY: OK. I think, that's -- let me emphasize then with a follow up question. To be very clear, you intend to recuse yourself from both the Clinton e-mail investigation and any matters involving the Clinton Foundation, if there are any?
SESSIONS: Yes.
Sessions’ statement in January was modified somewhat by testimony in March and his actual recusal statement.
This article from today addresses that.
The actual recusal may allow him to address the emails and U1 because they were investigated prior to his tenure.
About the Clinton Foundation, I don’t know. The issues would have to related to the campaigns in 2016. If something happened years ago that is actionable, that may not apply.
From the wording of his recusal, it would have to be related directly to the 2016 campaigns, both Trump’s and Clinton’s.
Regardless of whether he is involved, the DOJ has active investigations into all three items as we speak, according to Sessions.
Any further recusal statements would be reviewed by the ethics office of the DOJ, according to Sessions himself.
Well, he could certainly be a man with a good past who is COMPROMISED and BLACKMAILED into doing certain things. Which I believe is the case. So, until I know otherwise, I will consider him a DEEP STATE PLANT.
You live in AL and you believe Sessions is compromised.
OK, what is compromising him?
I see Sessions and Roy Moore as equally virtuous men, and you have said you are voting for Moore, which is great.
Now, Luther Strange—there’s a man who has done compromisin’. And former Gov. Bentley, whoa!
