That’s a great list! I remember all those myself, but we only went to “the lake” for a couple weeks in those summers we weren’t traveling all over the US visiting our many scattered relatives.
What about picking those Yellow Perch bones out of your teeth? Those were the boniest fish ever!
We didn’t have Grandma & Grandpa there unfortunately.
My wife would no doubt add the smell of mixed two-stroke outboard fuel, the roar of the outboard, and the slap of the waves on the wood runabout hull from dawn until dusk! I’ll pass your list to her.
You’re spot-on about the Yellow Perch. I DID live in fear of choking on a fish bone when we ate them. We always had buttered bread on the table - supposedly if you ate that with a bone in your throat you wouldn’t DIE. I got very good at picking out fish bones in my youth. ;)
We lived on the ‘quiet’ bay end of the lake - no wake - though we DID use an outboard to get out the the wide part of the lake to fish, so I’ll add that to the list, for sure. :)
Thank you for the quick flashback to a far more carefree time.
Wow, is that something!? I had no idea man-made waves were that advanced. I wonder how they do that? The Kelly Slater company is closed-mouthed about their tech.
That’s funny...I always had that same fear of a bone getting stuck sideways in my throat and choking. I don’t think we had the emergency buttered bread available, but plenty of corn on the cob to clear the throat!
Coming in out of the cold water, taking off the wet bathing suit and putting on warm socks and cowboy boots. (Well - the rest of the clothing too!) Then having a fresh-baked roll of grandma's.
The sound of the screen door slamming, the door on the outhouse closing, a boat out on the lake (oh - that's the Anderson's boat just by the sound), loons, and once in a rare while a wolf.
The smell of the sandy soil mixed with roots and decayed leaves while digging for worms.
And don't forget the mosquito bites and black flies and poison ivy rash. (The mosquitoes and poison ivy never bothered me - but those black flies!!)
Ours was a two room cabin with living room/kitchen on one half, two double beds and a bunk bed in the other half. Built in the early 1920’s and bought by my grandpa a few years later. Both grandparents knew each other then as new immigrants, so my mom commented numerous times that the first time she slept with my dad was when she was 8 years old! They would put blankets on the living room floor for all the little kids.
I would spend most of the summer up there with my grandma, grandpa and mom and my siblings, with dad coming up for long weekends. Northern Minnesota.
There isn't, that's a natural fall occurrence that takes place on Lake Michigan too..........It's a slow news day.
Surfing on Lake Michigan to...and some rivers around the globe.
Ben and Hoss and Adam and Little Joe would surf all the time.
LOL!
Um...corn would work, though I usually use corn kernels to catch Rainbow Trout! ;)
You’re Welcome. I hadn’t thought about those days for a long time - though I still have Grandma’s Cow Bell, and Summer is just NOT Summer unless I’m slathered in Coppertone...which I have on hand for ANY Sun-Related Emergency. ;)
The background looks like hwy 28 ascending slowly from incline village to crystal bay
*Happy Squeal*
How can we bottle this? We’ll be Millionaire Capitalists if we do, LOL!
I’m so glad you had that, too!
The screen door slamming, knowing whose boat was on the lake by the sound of the motor, digging for worms!
Grandpa preferred Night Crawlers, so you’d have to go out after dark with your flashlight to find them.
Oh, the very first time I ‘hunted’ Crawlers with my own boys? Precious Memories! (They were actually a little afraid! ‘Those are SNAKES, Mama!’ LOL!)
Amen, Amen, Amen! Still, so very, VERY sad that so many didn’t get to have the childhood we had and TRIED to give to our own kids.
Though - 63 Million of us must’ve had SOME permutation of that to have given us President Trump, today! Think he’d go Night Crawlin’ with us? He just might!
I know Melania would be up for it. *HEART*
I am getting chilly just looking at that. Woo wee.
