(Texas State Reps. Poncho Nevarez, Gina Hinojosa and Nicole Collier called for stricter gun regulations at a Wednesday press conference.)
Some members of the Texas state Legislature are now calling for stricter gun laws after a lone gunman shot and killed at least 26 people at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs on Sunday.
Democratic state Reps. Nicole Collier, Poncho Nevarez, Ramon Romero Jr. and Gina Hinojosa spoke out at a Wednesday news conference organized by gun control group Texas Gun Sense and urged fellow legislators to treat gun violence as a public health issue and to impose stricter gun laws in the state.
Its incumbent on the thoughts and prayers brigade to start looking at what were going to do for the next shooting because theres going to be another one, said Nevarez, D-Eagle Pass. You know, what about those folks at the football game or the concert or the recital. What are we doing about that? So, its really easy to look back and say none of the laws we have in place or none of the background checks could have stopped this. OK, but what about the next one?
Nevarez also characterized Texass open carry law as an oddity that should be repealed, arguing that only law enforcement personnel should be able to carry long rifles out in the open.
Collier called on state leaders to declare gun violence an issue of public health and criticized those, including President Donald Trump, who have focused solely on mental health issues after the shooting. While she admitted mental health does often play a role in such attacks, she said leaders should also look to restrict access to high powered weaponry.
If any other consumer product resulted in a fraction of the injuries and deaths [that guns do], Collier said, we would be scrambling to find solutions.
While some called for tighter gun regulations, the Air Force admitted Monday that it did not report shooter Devin Patrick Kelleys 2012 conviction for domestic violence against his wife and stepson to the FBIs National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
If Kelleys crimes had been reported, the conviction should have prevented him from purchasing the firearms used in the attack, a fact that Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott has pointed out in the wake of the shooting.
So how was it that he was able to get a gun? By all the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun, Abbott said on CNN Tuesday. So how did this happen?"
Bingo! We have a winner. We are safest when the legislature is not in session.
The “government” dropped the ball on this fiasco on numerous occasions.
How is another “law” going to prevent that?
Wheres that weirdo who is trying to impeach Trump?
Which one? Oh, you mean Al Green?? Oh, he’s still around like an epidemic of black plague........sheesh
Well, OK then.
Now we know what "gets your attention" so to speak.
Thanks!
.
The gun grabbers really needed a “mass shooting” in Texas to give their anti-gun bull**** a kick in the ass. I believe that Arizona will be next. The commie ‘RATS are probably already setting one up. Watch for it.
The “open carry is an oddity” remark is in itself an oddity. If we change the law it should be for Constitutional carry. As a RTC holder, since open carry became legal, I have yet to see ONE non law enforcement person carry openly. The reason is probably because the vast majority of licensees believe their advantage is always carrying concealed, unless hunting, on your own property, etc.
If the left-wing zealots get in power and try to limit gun rights in the future, there will be a REAL revolution.
“Some Texas state lawmakers call for stricter gun laws after church shooting”
This headline is inaccurate. It should read: Some Mexicans posing as Texas State Lawmakers call for stricter gun laws after church shooting!”
Hey Mr. Brilliance, have you ever heard of cars, knives, baseball bats?
Mexican legislators who want to take guns out of home owners’ hands for obvious reasons.
Outlaw Evil and Human Ingenuity. That would help.
Thanks for That Texas Mom!
God bless TEXAS!
I lived in Midland for three years
And liked it.
I may move East one more time
But I’ll probably stop in
Cochise County ARIZONA.
Gun laws are pretty good in AZ.
