dirtboy :" Hezbollah is a Shiite ally of Iran.
Israel and the Saudis will take the fight to Hezbollah
as a proxy war in the burgeoning Shia/Sunni conflict."

“Lebanon is 40% Christian”

My favorite middle-east restaurant is owned by Lebanese Christians.

I am not a fan of the Saudis in general, but I am always impressed by their Foreign Minister, Adel Al-Jubeir. He really has command of the facts and can really put the Saudi argument in the best light.

Another factor to consider, which might be a factor - the Syrian Army and Iraqi Armies just captured Abu Kamal/al Qaim at the Syrian/Iraqi border. This means that Iran’s Shi’ite allies (some under Iran’s direct command) have just secured one of Iran’s big strategic objectives - a land route from Iran to the Mediterranean Sea and Israeli border.

Perhaps the Saudis (and possibly the Trump Administration) hope to cut Iran off by taking Lebanon back from Iran’s local surrogates, Hizbollah. For that to be completely effective, the Coastal strip of Syria between Lebanon and Turkey would have to be secured as well - which would include the Alawite heartland at the core of the Assad Regime, and the Russian Naval Base at Tartus - possibly requiring regime change in Syria. That would be a major undertaking, requiring potentially large US, Turkish, and/or Israeli commitment.

They might seek to limit their counter-stroke however, to just securing Lebanon, to keep the Russians (and Syrians) out.

It might also still be possible to block that Shi’ite Crescent running through the border crossing at Abu Kamal/Al Qaim through some negotiated settlement or future military action, but it will be a lot harder, now that the Shi’ites have possession.

It looks like the ISIS Caliphate is now essentially gone, and there will be a flurry of effort to settle out the new areas of influence - maybe even a major conflict. Get the popcorn ready...

Iran is not al-Qaeda’s main sponsor, Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf Principalities are. Iran and al-Qeada have been on the opposite sides of every conflict in the region. The US government did more to help al-Qaeda just in the recent civil wars in Libya and Syria than Iran ever has.

Pathetic old neocons spreading lies again.

Actually, you are incorrect. The recent doc dump Trump ordered included tons of documents on Osama Bin Laden. Turns out Iran was big funder. And MbS - Saudi crown prince - has cut off funding by the large arrests and frozen bank accounts of those funding terrorism.

Many wealthy Saudis are arrested, assets frozen, and private jets grounded. Even the UAE is assisting with freezing Saudi citizens’ accounts. Bin Salman is roto rootering out a lot of corruption.

Despite all the disasters, corruption and treasonous acts to choose from, I think the “Arab Spring” and Corrupt Iran policy may be Obama/Hillary’s worst single harm to America and the world.

Admittedly, there is a lot of competition for this dishonor.

The new leader in Saudi Arabia is talking like he intends to reverse that trend. And in part of KSA of all places. NEOM is intended to be an autonomous region of KSA open to other religions. We shall see...

Where’s Saddam Hussain when you need him!

Yep! Someone used to post a meme of Sadaam saying "Miss me yet?" He was got rid of because the Gulf states did not like him, but they were too weak and corrupt to take him on. Giving the Saudis everything they wanted is sending us towards a disaster.

When the Bushes revealed that they had voted for Hillary Clinton, then that was ... well, we can all say whatever we want about them now. It is all out in the open.
