My experience with the mentally ill is that they have periods of lucidity. Long periods, that they use to fool the world into thinking they are ok, that and the new meds hide symptoms. These people need to be institutionalized because a "flare up" can be deadly to all.
Leaving them in society would make it easier to push gun control.
The only true cure is having exorcism done and you need a fully trained Catholic priest for that.
