A year into the Trump era, President Trump is living up to his advance billing as a black swan event for American politics disrupting everything he touches. He has opened divisions and brought chaos to both parties, and the turmoil is not going to abate with the midterm election next year, no matter what the result. The GOP may never be the same, while a lurch further to the populist left by Democrats might be a formula for additional electoral disaster. The culture wars have gone thermonuclear, with institutions such as the NFL suddenly embroiled in heightened political controversy.
Trumps critics on both left and right may claim vindication from the latest public opinion polls showing Trumps personal approval rating at 38% or less, the lowest ever for a first-year president. This is an abysmal rating at a time of accelerating economic growth, near-full employment, rising consumer and business confidence, and no major foreign crisis or war under way.
But given the intra-party divisions, lack of legislative progress in Congress, and the general tumult around the White House, perhaps it is more remarkable that Trumps approval rating is as high as it is. This reflects the solidity of his base, which remains as enthusiastic for Trump today as it was during the campaign.

And I love it.
Judging by the American Left and the mainstream media’s continued level of hate against Trump even to this day, I say Trump is still directly over target.
Patience, Molly. Look at what Trump has achieved just in this past week. He got the Bush family to out themselves, such that even Bush 1 admitted he voted for Hillary - thus insuring these cretinous Uniparty insiders never again appear in American politics.
As a consequence of Hillary’s defeat, you now have Democrat grandees like Donna Brazile and Elizabeth Warren, who just this week showed they will challenge the Clintons, and provide evidence of Hillary’s corruption.
The woman who broke the dam on Hollywood/Weinstein’s perversity, claimed to do it as a protest against Trump, but as a result, set off a chain-reaction uncovering the filth of yet another leftist-controlled cesspool - the entertainment industry.
The Trump earthquake will have many unpredictable aftershocks.
All in all, a favorable article from a Berkley egghead printed in the LA Times. Winning.
Isn’t it incredible that we are the same species, walk on the same earth, and breathe the same air as those who think he is wrecking the country and destroying their future?
They’re right. Trump is banging away at the country’s socialist training wheels and redirecting the future away from the totalitarian state leftism leads to. We see the same thing they do but in a different frame.
As another 2016 Black Swan sang...”And you know something is happening, but you don’t know what it is...”
even earlier from the sixties ... ‘somethin’s happening here. what it is isn’t exactly clear’...
Yeah but the Springfield didn’t get the Nobel. Brexit, Dylan, the Cubs, 45...it was a year of Black Swan events.
True that.
John Roberts, FoxNews, with the president in Japan, seems tonight to nervously have discovered that Japan is as serious about preparing against North Korea as TRUMP.
Everyone keep quiet.
There is no more road down which to kick the can. We’ve reached the point where further delay could cost millions of lives.
Despite theFixed it. LA Slimes.chaosmedia smears and Demagogic Party lawfare, Trump has managed to push the most conservative agenda in a generation
Great points. Thanks.
This opinion came out of Berkley? WOW! This guy gets it!
Hayward has written a 2 vol bio of Reagan thatis the best out there.
Til mine,comes out next May.
Lets see two articles read today at the LAT’s.., one by a fired CNN journalist middle eastern and the other a leftist educationalist at commie Berkeley. Is this publication serious?
