VBS typically only lasts a week and is mainly to let kids have fun with singing songs and reading Bible stories from picture books. A VBS helper basically just helps the teachers keep in kids in line.
Many VBS programs will invite members of the community to enroll their children in VBS for outreach. (The parents basically see it as a week of free day care.) In many churches you don’t even need to be a believer to volunteer as a helper.
