G.O.P. Governors in Key States Failed to Deliver for Bush (Flashback)

Bush. And so, from Tom Ridge in Pennsylvania to John Engler in Michigan to his own brother Jeb, in Florida, Mr. Bush could count on the company of an important Republican governor when he campaigned in the biggest battleground states. These governors and others like Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin helped define Mr. Bush's very candidacy, vouching for his character, policies and record on the network talk shows or even traveling the country in special teams to promote his campaign. But even more important, they were established winners in often Democratic-leaning states who grafted their own political organizations onto Mr. Bush's campaign in an effort to deliver him the White House.

Kasich did all he could to undermine Trump in crucial swing state Ohio, and Trump won it “big league”, going away.

“Mr. Bush may yet be declared the president. But his inability to take states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and, possibly, Florida has prompted an especially acute round of post-mortems among these Republican governors. “

California could have went for Bush in 2000. It was not so overly liberal as it is now, 17 years later in 2017.

Yea, I remember Trent Lott (I think) saying how all these great GOP governors were going to ‘deliver’ for Bob Dole in 1996.

I wondered back then just how does a GOP governor ‘deliver’ for a candidate. I know how Democrats do it, but to this day, I still have NO IDEA how this was supposed to get done for Dole.
