Question for ya on that. why do I see folks hanging around the home depot parking lot but never Lowe’s? It it Lowe’s policy to chase ‘em off?

I’ve witnessed the “hang outs” at ALL
hardware stores in Houston. Even at two
or three non big name stores. Competition
is stiff. If there’s even a slight chance
at a few hours work, they’ll line up.
Additionally, Houston has a horrific
problem with panhandling.

Why do we need these big box home improvement stores?

That's a really good question.
I suspect because Home Depot is the #1 Home Improvement Center and is favored by most contractors. They are going to go were they can get the work from.
There are a few locations that do get crowds at Lowes. Most likely due to the fact that their may not be a Home Depot around and local contractors don't really have a choice.
