These types of criminals aren’t mixed with the general population, which may be a good thing, since many converts to Islam are radicalized in prison and we don’t need this guy evangelizing.

Not necessarily. New York doesn't allow the death penalty, but he may have committed federal offenses as well. FedGov "does" have the death penalty.
