Sounds like a second generation McGiver. The star, who I’ve long forgotten, something like Anderson, said he was opposed to guns so he wouldn’t use them in the show.

Might be an urban legend. Richard Dean Anderson used guns all the time on Stargate: SG-1. The character Macgyver was opposed to guns because he accidentally killed a friend with one when they were kids. Henry Winkler was an executive producer and it wouldn’t surprise me if he insisted on the “no guns” policy.
