To be fair, Common Core was not only imposed on the students but on the teachers as well. They are forced to teach using methods that are often confusing to students and their parents. For example, in math the teacher will have to teach multiple strategies for a single math process, all while ignoring or deemphasizing the instruction of what is referred to as the “standard algorithm” - which is a eduspeak for the way we all learned to do a math problem before Common Core was invented. What would be a 3 step process for solving a math problem the “old fashioned” way becomes a 20 Step process. Needless to say, many students have trouble following these complicated processes which supposedly are providing greater understanding of mathematics. And the test scores are reflecting this confusion. If Common Core was so effective, we should be seeing major jumps in test scores. Not only a percentage point or two. Meanwhile, holding teachers accountable when they have been sent into the classroom, figuratively speaking, with burdensome teaching tools is unfair to them as well as their students.
