Secret talks have been held about selling vital Royal Navy warships to save money in the Ministry of Defence, it was claimed yesterday.
A number of Type 23 frigates plus two amphibious assault ships would be sold to Chile and Brazil under the plans.
But last night sources within the department reacted with fury and dismissed the claims, denying there was any such plan to sell current ships to the South American nations.
The Government is currently conducting a security and capability review, which is largely seen as a cuts exercise. Service chiefs have been told to find billions in savings over the next decade to fund an ambitious equipment programme.
Insiders said a number of frigates used to hunt Russian submarines were also discussed.
They added that Brazil and Chile were discreetly told the ships could soon be for sale, despite a Tory pledge to ensure the fleet of 13 frigates would not be reduced.
The Navys two amphibious assault ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark were also mentioned to the South American countries, according to a report in defence journal IHS Janes.

Ah socialism.
More likely they’re disarming prior to their transition to Islamic rule. Expect the same of other European countries in the near future.
South Africa did something similar before transitioning to black rule, when they totally dismantled their (very advanced) nuclear weapons program.
Maybe all of Europa will have their defense establishments devolve to the Irish model. In other words, since Europe has no enemies and plenty of welfare state commitments, why bother having much beyond some coastal patrol vessels and helicopters?
Raghead nations don’t need ships...Just camels for riding and goats for sex...
They need money to pay for the two aircraft carriers (that have no planes...:^) that were built to pay off the Glagow shipbuilders unions before the Scottish independence vote.
The Prime Minister of the UK is Theresa May of the so-called “Conservative Party” but of course she’s a social liberal and not that conservative on much of anything.
The UK is deep in debt and a dying nation that is not getting its act together on Brexit because phony conservative politicians don’t really want it as they go through the motions.
Just eliminate what meager assets remain in the damned Navy and then begin on the other branches - Just think of the money to be saved! And then spent in social welfare programs for ‘asians.’
Now look at them muslim ho's that's the way you do it
You play the Kalashnikov on the Al Jazeera.
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
camels for riding and goats for sex...
..............................
Now it ain't workin' that's not the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them ISIS guys are dumb
Maybe get a drone on your 12 o'clock
Maybe get blown up with your custom vest
camels for riding and goats for sex.
my apology to Dire Straits & SuperLuminal
Hilarious!
You are aware that Chile and Brazil are in South America, right?
Don't be so modest.....your comment was a perfect inspiration!
The words just meshed with the Dire Straits tune already playing in my head.
In August 1945, the Royal Navy sailed 885 commissioned warships.
Now I can't get it out of my head! Guess the only recourse is to watch Peyton's Nationwide commercials over and over. Maybe the two will cancel each other out...
Your point was?
