I don’t really care what language people use at home as long as they are adequately proficient in English so that they can interact in the larger community.

Here is the AMERICAN way of doing things. By the time we children passed through the AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL system of the time, we were fluent in the language of the land,

In the old days the immigrant hierarchy was: grandparents spoke only the mother country language, parents were bi-lingual, kids spoke only English.

My dad got off the boat from Germany in the '20s. In my early teens I asked him to teach me German. He smacked me in the head and said, "You don't need it. You're in America now." I told that to an Italian buddy of mine in school and he said his old man told him the same thing, but he didn't get smacked.

Personally, I don't care if they don't speak English at home, as long as they do in public. The problem comes when there are multi-lingual signs in public. Near the border, OK, as many businesses deal with crossover customers. !00 miles inland, forget it.
