Forget fast cars and yachts, passports are the new status symbol for the ultra rich
The Telegraph ^ | 24 October 2017 | Sophie Christie

Ultra high-net worth individuals are turning their attention away from sports cars, yachts and designer clobber, and are instead focusing on acquiring the latest status symbol among the super wealthy: passports.

Today it is entirely possible to buy and sell citizenship, and for the ultra rich, the more passports they can get their hands on, the better.

Citizenship by investment programmes (CIPs) is a concept that began in 1984, when the two-island Caribbean nation of St Kitts and Nevis came up with the idea to encourage wealthy individuals to pump money into its economy in exchange for a passport, which gives holders visa-free access to 132 countries worldwide.

For millionaires in countries that have politically problematic or restrictive passports, such as China and some regions in the Middle East, the ability to buy a passport that offers visa-free access to a huge number of countries around the world is priceless.

This should be done away with in this country. My understanding is that we currently require entrance visas for most people who come here.

The US has a visa wavier program that admits citizens of most of the EU plus a dozen or so other countries around the world without a visa.

Years ago I had a South African woman...in whom I was quite interested romantically,as it turns out...offer me money to marry her. She,of course, wanted a Green Card.I sometimes wonder how things would have turned out if I said yes.At least saying “yes” would have given me additional time to win her over.

I was dating this absolutely beautiful girl a while back, and she left me for some muslim turd who offered to pay her for marriage so he could get his greencard.

She’s the hottest thing to ever walk the planet, and was WAY crazy in bed but a treacherous a-hole in the end.

She did damage to me.

She would have your child, bring her family over, divorce you and plug you for the child support and alimony. That’s how these things work.

A US,Canadian,Australian or EU passport is all that a rich Chinese person would really need.

Of course given the citizenship laws currently in force in the US and Canada (and, basically, nowhere else in the civilized world),all you have to do is have a kid in either country and,voila!...anchor baby (thanks to the "automatic citizenship at birth" clauses).

Perhaps she wanted to get out of RSA permanently before she was murdered. I can understand that.

The family part, maybe.I met her parents and they were great. She was intelligent, well educated and classy and was thoroughly capable of making a good living in any English speaking country. This happened when things were getting bad in South Africa and even worse in "Rhodesia".

I suppose that it's more likely than not that I would have come to regret it.

Pre-nup. Every man in America today should go into marriage with one. Unfortunately, marriage in America these days sounds like the mating customs of scorpions, with lawyers playing the part of stingers.

“At least saying “yes” would have given me additional time to win her over.”

I suspect that happens a lot. The plan is Green Card and then leave the guy, but I suspect many times it works out long term - the girl realizes that the brutes from the ‘old country’ suck and sticks with the American.

In any case, I’d recommend it, assuming that the girl is from a family that values marriage more than divorce (i.e., not an American-style family)...as the odds of success are still likely much higher with these women.

“Pre-nup. Every man in America today should go into marriage with one.”

Agree...and one would think that Dr. Laura (before the Left took her out) would have supported pre-nups, but nope - she said roll-the-dice. Screw that. I told my boys they’d be crazy to marry anyone without a pre-nup. And if the babe doesn’t like it and won’t sign, then it also served its purpose.

Yes, after they destroy this country, they need those passports to escape.

Oh my, the South African I dated was another hottie. And her family was WAY more suspicious of me, than I of them.

I was in my early 20s, owned a house, had a very good job paying over $150k a year, and a decent portfolio. Her parents still had reservations because I didn’t come from money, and she did. Totally different wealth.

I had this sneaking suspicion that they were running from the Nuremberg trials anyway. So whatever.

Yikes! Mine was entirely "British" so no concerns there. However she, unlike many of her peers in SA,wasn't entitled to a British passport.

Mine was pretty...more than pretty enough for me...and came from what I considered to be a middle class family. But by South African standards she could have been considered to be rich.As I said, very intelligent and well educated (a Wits grad) and successful (DeBeers).

Nuremburg? Sounds like you had a lucky escape! :-)

(offtopic)
Stripped of romance and propagational duties, marriage is a business arrangement. I think a lot of guys get caught up in the T&A, but lose sight of the whole package that comes with it.

BTW, I'm happily married x 27 years. These are things I teach my sons.(/offtopic)
