What happened was the military amd defense industry did not (back then) insulate the missile wiring to shield it from sttay electronic transmissions.
The missile (I am not even sure it was from his plane but he was on deck in his cockpit for sure) took some stray Radio Frequency transmissions that were similar enough to the frequency that was used to launch the missile in battle that the missile was launched.
Every sailor in the 70’s 80’s and at least the early 90’s was trained on this and we all had to watch the film movies that were taken of the disaster.
There are plenty of reasons to be angry and criticize McCain.....lets not use a false story when the truth is enough.

Like all disasters it was a combination or a “confluence” of circumstances....however it it true.
It is why for decades afterwards every sailor had to go through this training along with how to properly fight fuel oil and JP5 (jet fuel) fires on deck.
One of the required training and prep work before a ship left for a 6 month deployment from an East Coast port was a trip to Gitmo for for firefighting and damage control evaluation then a trip through the “degausing” field.
Thw ship would go through testing for “stray emissions” before being sent on deployment.
Probably one of the most honest instances in McCain’s life.
And per the comments on his wife, I would probably believe him.

Yes, it’s true. However, he had more power in that romantic situation. A 43 year old Naval Attache’s attentions are powerful to a 25 year old woman. He knew he was married, who had loved him through his captivity, and he threw her affections away. If there’s a party in that mess that deserves to be scorned, it is he.

Indeed, McCain almost got killed in the accident. The accidentally launched rocket hit either McCain's plane or the one next to it. In any case, it started a nice fire, and McCain scrambled out of his cockpit, climbed over his plane's nose, and dropped to the deck. Not long after, ordnance began to cook off, and many guys got killed.
