My daughter and son-in-law are trying to make a living on 80 acres today. They have several barns (just put another one up last year). Half are pigs (which are very hard on barns) and the other half are sheep. They have cash crops, and some pasture for the animals. They have a large garden and sell organic veggies, honey, free-range chickens, eggs, pastured lamb, pies, salsa, pickles, etc. Between the four strands, I’m sure hopeful they can make a decent living. They utilize every square inch of that property.
We have many “truck farms”. Tomaties Melons, table corn, pumpkins etc
Some of the larger chicken/egg or hog barns in the country have been added to farms. But most rotate corn, beans, wheat
My neighbors all have tree farms. Oak, maple, etc.
I hope they are successful too.
“...daughter and son-in-law ...”
Our oldest daughter and son-in-law are trying to make a living on 120 acres in central NY! Their cash crop is organic milk. They have Guernseys and Holsteins and our son-in-law farms mainly to raise the corn and hay to feed the animals. Our daughter is an emergency room nurse to help fill in the gaps.
Best of luck to your daughter’s family!
