Who were the people that “didn’t bark”?
On my birthday, Nov 9, 1963 a guy I knew from high school days came to my off campus room and tried to convince me to join him. I had known that he had years of “militia” training in Colorado Mountains. He opened his “case” and it had the type of rifle that screws together and is seen in sniper movies. Also in the case were handguns and ammo.
His story was that the commies were planning a coup d’etat in Dallas Texas and he and his militia friends were going to go to Dallas and stop it. I had heard these conspiracy stories before and nothing had happened.
Conveniently I was a frequent attendee at both extreme right and extreme left wing groups/events in Chicagoland. So I checked out and both extremes had exactly the same conspiracy theory with the roles reversed.
On Nov 22 Hundreds of YPSL/YSA (Antifa) types and anti-communists were in Dallas heavily armed and expecting to prevent a coup d’etat, including my acquaintance. Yet only one person ... or two if you believe the grassy kinoll version... got a shot off. Hundreds of Americans came prepared and did nothing. They were probably in the wrong part of the city at the wrong time. Also, many of the people I had met in both extremes were not totally in contact with reality outside of politics.
Upon the event actually happening, I phoned the FBI and made myself available. They never got back to me.
Both the extreme right and extreme left groups assumed that the FBI was working for the other side and had infiltrated their groups. It is certain that the FBI knew in advance of Nov 22 that these armed extremists would be in Dallas at the same time as JFK.
It should also be remembered that the FBI and Secret Service did not like each other back then and did not share information. And prior to the JFK assassination, the Secret Service protection of the president was a joke. They did not do any of the things they allegedly now do to prepare for a presidential trip.
Of course, now, all law enforcement work in perfect harmony with no mistrust or jealousy. :)
