JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. Rattlesnake activity forced park managers to close Cottonwood Canyon Trail in North Table Mountain Park.
The temporary closure started Friday. It wasnt known how long it would last.
Officials with Jefferson County Open Space said there is a concentration of rattlesnakes near the trail what are getting ready to hibernate. They closed the area for public safety.
A man died two weeks ago after a rattlesnake bit him while he was hiking not far away in Mount Galbrath Park in Golden. Its about two miles away from the Cottonwood Canyon Trail.
Outdoor ping.
Yikes.
On a related note. A beautiful area for riding bikes. Some nice trails snake (pun intended) along the base of the Table Mountains. This is why I love Colorado!
About 10 miles SE from where I live.
My daughter and I got warned by another hiker at the end of September about one on one of the trails in Red Rocks. The next week, that hiker was killed in Golden.
I bet. Not sure if I have been there. I’m 100% sure I’ve been past it.
Yikes! I live at the upper end of the altitude where they can be found. I have not seen anything but a few garter snakes here.
Combined with Muslim hellholes I would rather avoid, it leaves only Canada, Scandinavia, New Hampshire and Bermuda.
Pretty much my back yard. I’ve been on top of that many times. Very exciting fire there a few years ago.
It has been a couple of years. The trails connects up north. It actually tacks along the base of the Table Mountain. Not exactly a road bike trail. Mountain bike is the best.
I have only seen one rattler here in CO. That was in Fruita at the monument about 6 or 7 years ago. My 2nd son spotted it in the dark...a baby. I got a picture of it. Will have to post later. :) I’m not against snakes. I know they serve a purpose. I just don’t want to be around them. Especially the deadly ones.
And Ireland, I believe?
I may have been on it. Long, long time ago in my youth I rode my mountain bike on a trail in the foothills with a gf.
I have been hiking on Mount Galbrath Park trails as well as lots of rock climbing on North Table Mountain. Never saw any snakes.
Time for a rattlesnake hunt.
Prizes for biggest, ugliest, oldest, and meanest.
Meat, skin, fangs sell at market prices.
Don your mail gentlemen (and ladies), secure your chaps and boots. Time to have some fun.

I once had a cobra pop it’s head up out of the grass next to where I was walking in Nepal.
It is truly one of the overlooked gold nuggets in Colorado — the bike trails. All the housing developments and open spaces have walking paths and trails that can be linked into one huge daylong trip.
Civilization is close in case of a mishap and for the most part, you don’t have to climb up onto the streets where there are cars.
Out of respect for the pedestrians, get yourself a bell and don’t speed.
They can hibernate in massive numbers. Party all winter long.
And make baby snakes? One massive snake orgy.
