It wasn’t that bad when he joined the Navy. On the night PT 109 was rammed by a Japanese destroyer he was violently slammed against the wheelhouse. Just imagine the several thousand tons of a steel vessel doing about 10 knots. Kennedy was lucky he wasn’t killed. That exacerbated the injury to the point that it would bother him for the rest of his life.
On a side note, JFK was sent to the far reaches of the South Pacific because it was learned that he was having an affair with a German spy. Papa Joe made sure JFK received special treatment.
Then, when JFK’s negligence caused the PT-109 to crash, the navy wanted to court martial him. Instead, Papa Joe made sure what really happened was covered up and made sure JFK got a medal for his “heroism.”
